GCSE

Geography is a popular choice at GCSE. Small group sizes with individual attention ensures that all students are able to reach their potential in this subject. This is reflected in our examination results, with a pass rate of more than 90% (A*-C) in each of the last three years.

At Key Stage 4 we currently follow the OCR GCSE syllabus A.

The course is broken down into four areas

  • People and their physical world (plate tectonics, rivers and coasts)
  • People and places to live (population and settlement)
  • People and their needs (quality of life, economic activity and energy)
  • People and the environment (local and global environments)

Students sit two exams worth a total of 75% of the final marks and carry out a piece of coursework worth 25% of the final marks.

For both exams there is a choice of two levels

  • Foundation tier where grades C-G can be awarded
  • Higher tier where grades A*-D can be awarded

Our Year 10 have embarked on the new AQA GCSE syllabus A.  The course is broken down into Human and Physical Geography.  We are studying

  • Population change
  • Changing urban environments
  • Tourism
  • The development gap
  • The restless earth
  • Water on the land
  • Challenge of weather and climate
  • Coastal zone

Students sit two exams worth a total of 75% of the final marks and carry out a Controlled Assessment worth 25% of the final marks.  For both exams there is a choice of two levels

  • Foundation tier, where grades C-G may be awarded
  • Higher tier Geography Fieldwork at Bartley Water where grades A*-D may be awarded

Fieldwork is obviously essential to GCSE studies and students take part in this activity in Sandown on the Isle of Wight and at Bartley Water in the New Forest.
