Role of the Governors
The Governors’ role is to advise, assist and support school activities. The Governors have a special responsibility towards the pupils, parents and staff of the two schools. The Governors have a crucial role in the direction, future success and achievements of the school.
The Governors:
- protect pupils’ interests.
- protect staff interests.
- provide a non-judgemental open forum for all to share individual issues and concerns, for senior members of staff in particular.
- assist with parent liaison.
- monitor the Schools’ performance, achievements, and pupil assessments.
- assist with the stimulation of ideas, appraisal and in the development of school policies.
- contribute to marketing strategies.
- evaluate and comment on the Head Teachers’ regular reports.
- monitor and contribute to the Schools’ Development Plans which stem from and awareness of the Schools’ needs as identified by the Head Teachers, staff and parents.
- are well informed of the required development of the Schools and give support to the Board of Trustee’s regarding future investment and expenditure.
- protect the image and reputation of the schools and deal with problems associated with pupil/staff behaviour, maintain the standards of the Schools and assist with official communication with parents or the media with regard to these matters.
- are involved in official Inspection arrangements, contributing effectively and giving support with action plans and future targets.
- are involved with the appointment and dismissal of staff, keeping the Trustees informed of the status and reasons for appointments and dismissals with due regard to current employment regulations and financial considerations.
- are involved with grievance procedures concerning pupils, staff and parents.
- are involved in issues associated with pupils’ behaviour.
- are involved with pupils’ exclusions.
- are involved with the policy development with the Trustees, regarding changing trends in education such as curriculum development, health and safety, child protection, bullying, drugs and sex education.
- inject ideas, additional expertise and enthusiasms towards the future aims, targets and development of the Schools.
- liaise closely with the Trustees, the Head Teachers, and the Bursar.
- are involved in and attend INSET days.
- present policy reviews to Heads of Year for feedback to Governors’ meetings.
- attend and promote the Schools at events such as Open Days, Taster Days, and New Parents Evenings.
- provide a bridge into the local community
